================================================================== Fall-back version (with Netscape only) INSTALLATION - TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS - FIXING PROBLEMS ================================================================== 1. Preferred start: "Standard version" 2. Alternative version: "Fall-back version" 3. Solutions to Problems and Error Messages - Fixing sockets and Proxy server problems - Running the Windows Internet Connection Wizard 4. Contacts ================================================================== 1. Preferred start: "Standard version" To run the collection, select the Library entry under the Programs menu (Windows 95/98/2000/NT) and select "Standard version". This version of the software is very flexible and automatically adapts to many different computer configurations: standalone, networked, server, default web browser (Explorer or Netscape) and so on. You can select Internet Explorer to be your default web browser in the "configuration and browser settings" menu in the "Enter Library" window when you start a collection. ================================================================== 2. Alternative version: "Fall-back version" Only if the network parameters on your computer are not properly configured, error messages will result when you run the standard Greenstone software and it is not possible to access the collection. Should this happen, start the Greenstone software again but this time choose the "Fall-back version". This is a less flexible version of the software that insists on using Netscape's web browser (you will have to go back and install this from the CD-ROM if you do not already have this on your computer) but anticipates the corrupted network parameters and is designed to work around the problem. ================================================================== 3. Solutions to Problems and Error Messages - Fixing sockets and Proxy server problems - Running the Windows Internet Connection Wizard Selecting Internet Explorer In the Greenstone Digital Library Software dialog box (i.e. the box containing the 'Enter Library' button) select "Configuration and browser settings". Then select Settings from this Configuration menu. A dialog box opens which gives you the option of which browser to use. If Internet Explorer is installed on your computer you may select it from the list to use it. Please note that it is not possible to select Internet Explorer in the "Fall-back version". Problems accessing the collection If the network parameters on your computer are not properly configured, error messages will result when you run the standard Greenstone software and it is not possible to access the collection. Windows NT installation problems Follow the above instructions for Windows 95/98/2000. It is recommended that the software is installed while you are logged in as the "Administrator" as Netscape and other programs cannot be configured from the "user group" accounts Problems with sockets. Solution: run the Windows Internet Connection Wizard On some (mainly) Windows NT computers we have had reports of neither version of the Greenstone software running. The error message reported is a failure to establish a socket connection.  The solution to this problem is to run the Windows Internet Connection Wizard -- even if you use a standalone PC and are not connected to Internet. The wizard is located under the Windows "start" button: Programs -> Accessories -> Communication 1. Answer the questions asked by the wizard in a way that best fits your computer setup (for example, choose Local Area Network (LAN) if you use your computer standalone with no dial-up modem for Internet access). 2. Once this is completed, the wizard will prompt you to reboot the computer.  This done, start the Greenstone software (standard version) once more.  3. When your web browser is accessed you will be prompted by the same wizard to answer a few more questions (but these are the last ones).  Answer them again according to your situation and then, finally the starting page to your Greenstone collection will appear! Proxy server problems with laptops Problems will also arise if your browser has a proxy server set but your computer is physically disconnected from the network. (This often occurs with laptop computers). A dialog box will inform you of this after a 20 second timeout. If this occurs, alter your browser's preferences to avoid using the proxy server. Alternatively, install the Netscape Communicator browser from the CD-ROM as described in 6. Alternatively, select Internet Explorer as your default browser and run the Windows Internet Connection Wizard -- even if you use a standalone PC and are not connected to Internet. ================================================================== 4.
